Fold
To “fold” means to discard our holding in a scenario where we don’t wish to match the wager made on the current street.

Four-Bet
The fourth bet in a betting sequence.

Fourth Street
In a Poker round, Fourth street is a specific stage. The second betting round in Stud. It's called 'fourth' because players have been dealt four cards at this stage.

Free Card
A card seen without having to invest additional chips. Times when you see the river or turn not betting yourself.

Fund
Refers to the total amount of funds a player has at his disposal for the purpose of playing poker.

Fund Management
The strategies which govern when to move up and down in limits.

Gamble
To risk something on a game of chance. This expression first cropped up in Middle English texts in 1726, originally meaning to 'play, jest or be merry'.

Gambler’s Fallacy
The mistaken belief that the outcome of a random event is influenced by previous outcomes. Believing that the next spin of the roulette wheel must be black because the previous ten spins have all been red is an example of gambler’s fallacy.

Gambler’s Ruin
A gambling strategy which can bankrupt or ruin any player who uses it is termed as gambler’s ruin.

Hard
In blackjack, any hand that is not ‘soft’.

Hard Hand
A Blackjack hand consisting of any two cards other than an Ace.

Hard Ways
In craps, double 2s, double 3s, double 4s, and double 5s.

Harm
Gambling related harm can be divided into seven key areas: Financial harm, relationship disruption, emotional or psychological distress, decrements to health, cultural harm, reduced work or study performance and criminal activity. These harms can further be considered as general harms (which occur at any time), crisis harms, which are associated with attempts to seek help, and legacy harms, which occur long after gambling has ceased.

Heads Up
Refers to a poker hand where only two players are involved. This could refer to either the initial deal, or the later betting rounds after every other player folds.

Hero Call
A call made with a speculative hand in the hopes that our opponent is bluffing. Is hero calling ever a good idea?!

HH (Hand History)
A poker game feature that shows the history of the hands dealt to the player. This feature is most helpful for learning to make calculations and generally helps keep track of your game. You can use the gathered data to develop better strategies.

High Hand
A poker hand where we don’t hold a pair or stronger. The strength of our hand is defined by its highest card (Aces are high in most variants).

High Roller / Casino Gamblers
The term ‘High Roller’ describes gamblers who participate in the highest-stakes games. It doesn’t apply exclusively to poker. Any player who wagers impressive sums of money! Many live casino games offer special high roller tables with increased bet limits.

Hijack / Hijack Seat
A position at the poker table, refers to the position to the immediate right of the “cutoff” and two seats to the right of the “button.” Also considered late position in a full ring game of hold'em or Omaha (i.e., nine- or ten-handed).

Hit / Twist
Used in online blackjack, a hit is a request for another card. We “hit” when a card falls that gives us a decent hand. “We held a flush draw on the turn but hit on the river”.

Hold’em / Cadillac of Poker
The most popular poker variant. In hold'em, a pair in the hole that is larger than any community card on the board. A straight completed from the outside by one of two possible cards. For example, if your pocket cards are 5-6 and the flop shows 4-7-king, either a 3 or an 8 on the turn or river would complete your open-ended straight.

Hole Card
A Hole Card is the face down card a dealer receives during a game of blackjack. In other table games, a hole card is the card the player receives. In Hold’em players are dealt two hole cards while in Omaha they are dealt four.

Hot Streak
An extended run of good luck.

Hot Table
A gaming table where all or most players are winning.

House Edge / Edge
The built-in advantage that the casino has in all games. It is usually gained by paying out at odds slightly below the true odds of winning, and is expressed as a house edge. A game with a 2% house edge, for example, should net the casino a $2 profit for every $100 wagered in the long run.

House Hold / Casino's Hold / Theoretical Hold
The share of chips the player has bought that is won back by the casino.

House Rules
Games rules that are specific to a particular casino, or the regulations of a particular video slot or table game including buy-ins.

ICM (Independent Chip Modelling)
Refers to a mathematical technique of assigning real monetary values to tournament chips.

Implied Odds
A pot odds calculation factoring in the additional chips we stand to win on later streets if we make our hand.

Inducements
Refers to any encouragement or persuasion to participate in a gambling activity. Examples of inducements may be an offer of free credit, a voucher for signing up to a betting account, a gift for referring a friend, or by the way of a reward for frequenting a particular venue. Victoria does not allow promotions for gambling in the form of inducements.

Inside Bets / Instant Bet / Instant Play
(1) An inside bet is a bet placed on inside the numbers in a game of Roulette. (2)

Inside Straight Draw / Gutshot / Gutshot Straight Draw / Belly Buster
A type of straight draw where we are waiting on a card on the inside of our structure to complete the straight. For example, we hold 5,6,8,9 and need to hit a 7 in order to complete our straight.

Insurance
It is a bet which is offered to the player in online blackjack when his face up card is an ace. A side wager made with another player at the table. If hero’s hand does not hold up, he’ll receive an insurance payout from the other player.

Insurance Bet / Double-sided Wager
Two or more bets that cover each other.

Interactive Gambling
Refers to the range of activities that are offered through interactive media, including computers, mobile and smart phones, tablets, and digital television. The term interactive gambling is largely interchangeable with internet, remote and online gambling.

Keno
Keno is a game in which a player bets that their chosen numbers will match any of the 20 numbers randomly selected, via a computer system or a ball draw device, from a group of 80 numbers.

Kicker
The highest card to play into 1 pair and high card, or 5/4/3 of a kind, or 2 pairs. Or cards that don’t directly formulate a hand but still contribute to the overall strength of a hand since they are used as side cards. In scenarios where two players have the same hand, the best kickers will win.

Kill Game
A situation where a third blind is created. It occurs only under specific circumstances outlined in the casino rules, so be sure to study those before you start playing.

LAG (Loose Aggressive)
Describes a player who plays many starting hands in an aggressive manner.

All casinos that are not online.

Last Longer
A side bet wagered between tournament participants to see who lasts longer. The last player to bust out of the tournament wins the bet.

Late Position
A position near the end (last seat). It’s one of the most advantageous positions at the table as it allows you to make a bet when you have the majority of the information.

Limit (s)

Refers to a player type whose style can be characterized with the words “loose and crazy”.

Manual Flush

In video poker and draw poker games, to discard. To return a losing hand to the dealer at showdown without showing it to the table. Mucking is usually allowed when we are the caller on the final street, but not if we took the last aggressive action before showdown.

Multi-Hand Game
Any game where players can play more than one hand at once.

Multi-Player Game / Multi-player / MultiPlayer Casino

Nut Flush / Ace-high Flush / Nut Flush Draw

Nut-low
The lowball version of “the nuts”. It describes the best possible low hand in a lowball (or split pot) variant of poker.

Nuts
The best possible hand considering the community cards. The nuts can never lose, it can only chop.

Sic-bo / Tai-sai / Dai-siu / Big & Small / Hi-lo
Sic bo is a casino game that originated in ancient China and is played with three dice. The literal meaning of sic bo is “precious dice” or “dice pair”, while dai siu and dai sai mean “big small”.

Side Bet
A type of bet that can be placed in some casino games, on an outcome that is not directly related to the result of the game. For example, in some blackjack variants you can place a side bet on whether the total value of your first two cards will be higher or lower than 13.

Snake Eyes
The outcome in a game of Craps when both dice show a one.

Split
An option available in a game of Blackjack, allowing players to split the first two cards dealt in two separate hands, providing they are of the same value.

Stake
The size of a bet as well as the amount of money invested in a bet.

Stand
Declining the option to be dealt another card in a game of Blackjack.

Stiff
A slang term used by dealers to refer to a player that doesn’t tip.

Straight Flush
A Poker hand consisting of five cards of sequential rank and same suit.

Straight Up Bet
A Roulette bet on a single number.

Street Bet
An Inside Roulette bet on 3 sequential numbers; pays 11:1.

Sucker Bet
A wager that gives the house a significantly larger house edge than most other bets, especially when on the same game.

Suit
A family of playing cards; each standard deck has four suits - Clubs, Spades, Hearts and Diamonds.

T&C (Terms and Conditions)
Rules that dictate who may play at a casino, player rights and warranties, banking and bonus policies, and all other aspects of using the casino’s services.

Table Hold
The total profit made by a gaming table over a specified period of time.

Table Stakes
A situation where a player is allowed to go all-in when they run out of chips. It’s a rule used in many casinos.

TAG (Tight Aggressive)

Teen Patti / Teen Pathi
Means "three cards". It is an Indian gambling game, also known as Flush (or Flash), and is almost identical to the British game 3 Card Brag. An international 52 card pack is used, cards ranking in the usual order from ace (high) down to two (low). Any reasonable number of players can take part; it is probably best for about 4 to 7 players.

Tell / Read
A tell is an unconscious indication from our opponent that he has a certain type of holding.

Texas Hold'em
Played in Texas throughout the 1900s, Texas Hold'em was introduced to Las Vegas casinos in 1967 and was originally just called Hold'em.

Texture
Usually refers to the board texture in community card games such as Hold’em and Omaha but could ultimately be used to describe any group of cards such as boards in Stud.

Theoretical Loss
The theoretical loss is the amount of money a player is expected to lose based on the long run statistical advantage the casino has on the particular game being played.

Third Base
In multi-player table games (especially blackjack), the last player to act.

Three of a Kind
We make this hand when we hold three cards of identical rank along with two kickers.

Three Pair
A term that is used mostly in Omaha variants. Only two of the pairs count, but the third pair provides additional outs to make a boat.

Three-Bet
Refers to the third bet in a sequence of bets.

Tie / Push
A game outcome where opponents tie and all bets are returned to the affected player as well as when two hands are of equivalent strength and hence split/chop the pot.

Tilt
Refers to playing poker with an affected mental state – especially anger, but also fear, lack of motivation etc etc.

Time
A request for a timeout in a tournament. It’s mostly used in situations where a player has to do some deep thinking about their next move. The length of ‘time’ and specific regulations of its use should be outlined in the tournament rules.

Time Bank / Tank
The optional extra time available to online poker players during a hand as well as the act of thinking about a decision at the tables.

Time Buy-in
A fixed amount of money charged for the right to participate in certain games for a period of time.

Toke / Tip
A slang term for a tip given to a dealer.

Top Pair
A pair that has the highest card on the flop.

Tracking Software
Software that tracks poker results along with a range of other features.

Trap
To play a strong made hand passively in the hope that our opponent launches a big bluff.

Trey
Commonly used term to describe a card of rank “Three”.

Trips
In poker and poker-based casino games, slang for three-of-a-kind.

Turn
The fourth of five cards dealt to the community board in Texas Hold'em.

Turnover / Rollover / Play-through
Turnover is the expression used to describe the amount wagered. It is all the money bet before any winnings are paid out or losses incurred. It does not include any additional charges that may also be paid at the point of purchase, such as the selling agents' commission in the case of lotteries.

Two Pair
A hand made by holding two sets of pairs along with one kicker.

Two Two / Pocket Twos / Ducks
This is the worst pocket pair you can get in the Hold’em variant of poker, but you can still win a huge pot if you flop a set. You'll hit a set approximately 1 time for every 8 tries.

Two-bet
The second bet in a betting sequence.

Two-tone
Describes a board texture or group of cards consisting of two distinct suits.

Under the Gun
A name for the player, who sits on the left of the blind before the flop or a term used to describe the player who is first to act on the first betting round.

Underbet
A bet sizing less than 50% of the pot.

Unpaid
A bettor who has won but has not been paid.

Up the Ante
A common expression meaning to “up the stakes”. Also can be used to described the increase antes on each blind level of a poker tournament.

Upswing
A prolonged period of winning (especially when the winrate is higher than anticipated). I.e. running good.

Variance
A term used to describe the ups and downs of a poker players career. Variance is much larger than many players realise. This glossary entry should help to put things into perspective.

Variant
A particular brand of poker: there are many. For example, Hold’em, Omaha, Stud, 5-card Draw etc etc.

Video Streaming
Footage of live casino games is streamed to your computer or mobile device using video streaming and cutting edge studio cameras.

Villain
A common poker term used to describe our opponent in a hand of poker.

VIP Player
A player who is considered high value by a casino, usually because they play very regularly and/or for high stakes.
